Course Description:
CQI
for Extracorporeal Therapy (CQI-ECT) is an evidence- and
problem-based on-line course designed for the clinical managers of
departments providing extracorporeal therapies such as perioperative
autologous blood collection, extracorporeal support for cardiac
operations, long-term ECC support for respiratory or cardiac
failure, hemodialysis or hemapheresis. CQI-ECT is divided into ten
weekly, one-hour sessions that review the major aspects of
Continuous Quality Improvement for Extracorporeal Therapy employing
the principles of Six-Sigma process improvement. As well, CQI-ECT
leads the student-participant through the steps to perform their own
CQI project at their clinical site. Students will share their
individual process improvement projects with classmates on-line.
This course is divided into ten weeks reviewing all aspects of Continuous Quality Improvement for Extracorporeal Therapy.

Week 2 - Defining clinical problems: Health Care Failure Mode and Effect and Analysis
Week 3 - Measuring; error reporting
Week 4 - Analysis variables; basic statistical approach to error reduction
Week 5 - Statistical approach to error reduction (Continued)
Week 6 - Improving health care processes; Personal project design
Week 7 - Controlling health care processes; Personal project design
Week 8 - Individual project abstract presentations; Discussion of personal projects
Week 9 - Individual project abstract presentations (Continued)

Each week the student should review; the chapter, the Handout and any peer-reviewed articles assigned for the week.
Classroom Session;
At a prearranged time and day (Wednesday evenings 7:00 PM EST), there will be an online classroom session. Be prepared to discuss, during the classroom session, the material studied during the week. The instructor will lead a seminar type discussion on the subject. It will be highly interactive with active discussion on the assigned subject.
Forum Section:
Each week several discussion type questions will be found in the Forum section of the web site. Please review these questions and enter your comments. Your instructor will review all responses and enter comments relative to the questions. You should complete the Forum section assignment prior to the classroom session.
Tests and Examinations:
There will be a weekly quiz with a possible
midterm and final exam to meet the requirements of the
ABCP and other CEU-granting organizations.
